Bios are generally written by someone else (or made to sound like they are). I thought I’d try a different approach and write something myself, in my own voice. Yes, I was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and yes, I spent several years growing up in Des Moines, Iowa – though I’m not going to start there. For me the world really awakened in the summer of 1995 when I started touring with the international musical group Up With People. What does Up With People have to do with real estate? At the time I would have said nothing, though now I can look back and see that experience was when I began to understand, through my stays with host families and visits to cultures much different than mine, that where we live is a foundational element of our lives. That element allows us to connect to our culture, our society and to our life. It sounds a bit altruistic for a Realtor perhaps, though as I’ve helped nearly 1000 people buy and sell over the last decade I can tell you this is true.
I entered real estate mostly by accident about 2AM in late winter of 2000. I was dissatisfied with my current position as a sales agent for a staffing firm and wanted something else. I watched and ordered one of those late night infomercials about real estate (seriously) and like most of us who order anything at 2AM – wondered the next morning why I wasted the money. It turns out the money wasn’t wasted. The material of course didn’t build all of this, though it did spark a sense of possibility.
I decided to get licensed initially to help my own investments and to see what might happen and by early 2001 it was clear I could make a living selling real estate. 100% commission scared the heck out of me, though I learned early on if I didn’t focus on the commission, more commission actually came in. It seemed my clients could tell I wasn’t focused on my check and trusted me to help.
2001-2004 were big years in Washington DC real estate and I sold a lot of houses mainly by myself. By late 2004 I was frankly working too much and realized I needed help. I hired my first assistant and without really knowing it, began a path of learning how to succeed as much through other people as I had through my own efforts.
The “team” began forming with that first hire in 2004 and has continued to grow ever sense. Our purpose as a company grew organically out of my earlier discovery that connecting people to the right place to live – in order to enhance greater happiness in all areas of their life - was deeply meaningful to me and to my team.
Today I’m very proud to say we have gathered together with a common purpose which is to connect with our clients’ lives in order to move them from where they are now to where they want to be. We each have a role to play in that process and work every day toward that goal. My role on the team now is to lead and inspire that purpose. I keep my eye on the “why” of everything we do to make sure it authentically connects with us and our clients. My focus is now on continuing to build a group of people committed to moving your life forward.
